“Electrolyte” suspended from Sunderland Transport Interchange by Simon Watkinson. Structural & Civil Consultants Ltd. worked with the artist Simon Watkinson to produce a complex to hang within the new Park Lane Bus Station in Sunderland. Lights revolve electronically to produce constantly changing patterns. After much consideration, acrylic was used for the sculpture, hung from steel wires and rods. Structural analysis was needed to minimise the structural members and to check the effects on the supporting structure.
“Gateway Art” Feasibility Study Report on Queen Alexandra Bridge Arches In association with the City of Sunderland, we inspected the old railway arches that originally carried the railway onto the upper deck of the bridge across the Wear. We prepared a report and commented on five entries from selected artists. The winners were Langlands and Bell whose submission (right) is currently being taken to the next stage.

“Sight Lines” for City of Sunderland and RJB Mining by David Patton. As illustrated below, this sculpture is the focal point to the landscaping of a former large opencast quarry. Engineering input was needed as advice on erection of the massive standing stones. As illustrated left, on a smaller-scale, steel sculptures placed between the stones are aligned with features on the horizon. Engineering input involved suggestions for the fabrication of the steel structures particularly with a view to limiting damage from vandals.
