OLDER BRIDGES

WHITBY ROAD BRIDGE, SCARBOROUGH
We provided the structural input for an Environmental Assessment Report compiled by Binnie Ferguson McIlveen for Yorkshire Water. The bridge was dangerous for pedestrians as it had no footway and very poor road alignments. A structural assessment had also expressed doubt over the adequacy of the brick parapets. We were able to justify the existing masonry parapets. Widening the bridge with a cantilevering deck slab was the preferred method for creating a pedestrian crossing. This enabled the arches to be waterproofed at little extra cost.

HEWORTH BRIDGE, YORK CITY COUNCIL
One of a number of masonry and steel bridges assessed for their current condition and load capacity. Such steel bridges always need comprehensive analysis.

QUEEN ST RAILWAY BRIDGE,
FOR YORK CITY

The main viaduct is now owned by Railtrack. It originally spanned over the sidings into the old railway station within the city walls. It was constructed in 1877 with seven masonry arches, but in 1907 it was widened using the Hennobique ferro-concrete system, and one of the spans was extended with a steel deck.

From the Principal Inspection and Structural Assessment, we identified several high priority measures. As the bridge is in an environmentally sensitive position, it was recommended that further sums should not be spent on low priority measures until the bridge’s role in the future of the area had been reviewed.
