STEEL FABRICATION RION ANTIRION 2.86km
FIVE-SPAN CABLE-STAY BRIDGE

Cable anchor tubes welded to the deck beams. The three central spans are 560m, while the side spans are half this. A key design feature is the requirement for exceptional seismic loading, while in the fabrication yard, particular attention was paid to welds subject to stress reversal

Corrosion protection involved a zinc alkyl silicate primer and two coats of high solids polyamide cured epoxy. A polyurethane finish was applied on site. Pinholes become a concern with such high-build coatings.

The Rion-Antirion bridge crosses the Corinth Gulf strait near Patras in Greece. The steel was fabricated at Cleveland Bridge and Structural & Civil Consultants held Supervision role on behalf of Faber Maunsell.

Drilled plate awaiting fabrication. The project involved 22,000 Tonnes of steel.
