COSTAL STRUCTURES

The Directors of Structural & Civil Consultants were both involved with the Thames Barrier and have practical knowledge of most form of steel piles, off-shore works, cofferdams, fairing cells and fendering.

Sea Defences
The Practice has undertaken the inspection of many sea walls. This pier protects the mouth of the Wear at Roker.

Beach Sculptures
The aggressive coastal environment was a key consideration when designing the foundations and specifying the materials for these slender concrete bowls that have been positioned near the high-water level on the beach near Sunderland.
The concrete specification was at the forefront of technology utilising self-compacting concrete within a spun steel inner shutter and a fibreglass external shutter coated with retarder. An inhibitor was added to the concrete mix to help resist corrosion, allowing the use of conventional reinforcement.

Nuclear Steam Generator Landing, Mexico PSC Heavy Lift (now Fagioli) called upon Structural & Civil Consultants to design a jetty that could be constructed on a beach in the Gulf of California, Mexico for the offloading of generators and trailers weighing 730 Tonnes. We prepared outline designs for five different options and a detailed design for the sheet piled option. Under such extraordinary loading, even the calculated elastic deformation of the fill and structure were significant. The specification for the earthworks was complicated by the need to make use of local resources at this isolated spot. Fortunately, the Site Investigation revealed that selected sands from specific parts of the sand dunes behind the beach had properties that met the requirements, although the silty sands on the lower parts of the beach had to be removed.
